Apple May Consolidate Side Controls Into a Single Multifunction Key

2 min read

Apple might be preparing to streamline the side of its flagship smartphones by merging the Action button and the Camera Control into one unified input. According to reports from leaker Instant Digital, the tech giant plans to phase out the standalone Action button entirely in favor of a hybrid system. Under this proposed setup, a quick tap would instantly launch the camera, while holding the button down would trigger whatever custom shortcut the user has assigned, effectively preserving current functionality while cleaning up the hardware profile.

This shift appears logically aligned with how these tools already operate within iOS. Because the Action button traditionally relies on a long press for activation and Camera Control uses a single click for photography, combining them wouldn’t fundamentally change the user experience. Furthermore, recent software updates have moved certain visual intelligence features directly into the camera app, freeing up the physical gestures needed to make this consolidation possible without sacrificing utility.

Industry analysts suggest this move could solve several problems at once. When Camera Control first arrived on the iPhone 16, it met with mixed reviews regarding its ergonomics and overall necessity. By giving it double duty as an action trigger, Apple gives the sensor a clearer purpose and simplifies the manufacturing process. This reduction in physical components also minimizes common user errors, such as accidentally hitting volume keys when trying to reach a specific shortcut.

While Apple hasn’t officially confirmed these changes, there is existing evidence that they are experimenting with fewer buttons across their ecosystem. If these rumors hold true, we could see this redesigned interface debut during next year’s anniversary releases in late 2027. Whether these devices arrive as part of an iPhone 19 or a special twentieth anniversary edition remains to be seen, but it marks another step toward Apple’s long term goal of minimalist industrial design.
